Why Translating Your YouTube Videos Might Actually Hurt Your Business
YouTube rolls out new features regularly and they rolled one out a while ago that allows you to fully localize your content. You can now auto-dub your videos and translate your thumbnails, titles, and descriptions for foreign audiences.
In theory, it sounds amazing. If you remove all friction by translating your content, just like Netflix did when they brought Squid Game to English-speaking audiences, you open up your total addressable market.
And some of the biggest YouTube creators we know launched multiple channels that were dedicated to translating their content for other regions. It’s a massive opportunity to capture more views.
But, while this is good for entertainment based channels the get paid for views… it might be terrible for your business.
For the past nine years, I’ve been helping entrepreneurs and experts build personal brands that serve their business, not just gain vanity views. And when it comes to translating your content, you have to ask yourself one very important question:
Do viewers from other languages actually benefit my business?
If you rely purely on AdSense revenue, or if you sell a global software product, then yes, go for it! But if you are a consultant, a coach, or a service provider (like a Fractional CFO or a marketing agency), you have to be able to speak your client's language.
If you use YouTube's auto-dubbing feature and your video blows up in a foreign country, what happens next? You can't get on a Zoom call with them. You can't invite them into your live community. You can't actually serve them.
Worse yet, you run a massive algorithmic risk. If your video finds success in a foreign region, YouTube’s algorithm might start optimizing your channel toward that demographic. Suddenly, the algorithm is steering your content AWAY from the primary, English-speaking market you are actually trying to hit.
As an identity engineer, I look at branding and marketing as a system. If your system is generating leads you cannot close, it is a broken system!
Stop chasing views just for the sake of a graph going up. Do not use the translation features if you cannot speak the language. Instead, optimize strictly for the market you can truly serve.
