The Decline of Shorts and the Rise of Long-Form

If you are an expert, a consultant, or a professional service provider, you have probably been told the same piece of marketing advice over and over again: “You need to post on TikTok. You need to be doing Instagram Reels. You need to post three times a day.”

So, you try. You set up your ring light, you point your camera, and you try to condense years of hard-earned expertise into a snappy 30-second clip with trending audio playing in the background. Maybe you get a few hundred views. Maybe one video even goes “viral”.

But then you look at your calendar, and your calendar is empty. No new leads. You are exhausted, you are spending hours trying to figure out video editing, and you feel like you are running on a content treadmill that never stops.

If this sounds familiar, I have some good news for you: Short-form content is no longer king.

My name is Henry Sims. For the past nine years, I have been the “Identity Engineer” behind entrepreneurs in over 30 different industries building personal brands that position them as the undisputed authority in their space—all without having to become 24/7 content creators. I am a self-admitted introvert and a marketing nerd. I don’t like being the center of attention, and I certainly don’t want to be part of the hustle culture of grinding until you burn out.

In this article, I am going to break down exactly what is happening to short-form content and the most impactful way to future-proof your business and convert your dream clients.

The Evolution of the Algorithm: From Connection to Interruption

To understand why your short-form content isn't converting viewers into clients, we have to look at how the algorithms have changed.

If we go back in time and look at how social platforms began, the feed was chronological and based on connection. You followed an account, and the platform served you content from the accounts you followed. That was the only way the algorithm knew how to show you what you wanted to see.

But over the years, these platforms have accumulated more data than we can even fathom. The algorithm understands what content we are clicking on, what we watch the longest, and what makes us close the app. It averages out all of this data to predict what we want to see and when we want to see it.

Today, the algorithm is purely a predictive technology. It has gone from showing us what we follow, to recommending content that performs well with other people who share our demographics. The goal of the platform is simple: keep you on the app as long as possible so they can serve you more ads and make more money.

The Trap of Interruption Marketing

Here is the problem with short-form platforms like TikTok and Instagram: when users open these apps, they are scrolling through RANDOM content. They do not go to TikTok to search for a deep, nuanced solution to their complex business problems. They go there to be entertained.

This is called interruption marketing. The platform places a video in front of a user, hoping that it will interrupt what they are doing and capture their attention. Because these platforms optimize for mass watch time and mass engagement, the algorithm heavily favors "big dopamine hit" content.

As a business owner, an entrepreneur, or an expert, it is incredibly difficult to compete. You are trying to share highly valuable, niche business content that speaks directly to your ideal client and the algorithm is forcing you to compete against prank wars, celebrity gossip, and viral dance trends.

If you dilute your messaging and your expertise just to get mass viewership, you might get views, but you will not get clients. You want to create niche content that serves a very specific avatar, because that is how you build true trust.

The Math of Trust: Google’s 7-11-4 Rule

If short-form interruption marketing isn't the answer, what does it actually take to gain a client's trust in today's digital landscape?

Google conducted a study on consumer buying behavior. Because Google Analytics is installed on the majority of websites online, and because billions of people use Google to search for solutions every day, they have more data on how people buy than anyone else on the planet.

Out of this study came a framework known as the 7-11-4 Rule.

The rule states that, on average, before someone makes a buying decision, they need:

  • 7 hours of media consumption from you.

  • 11 touchpoints (interactions with your brand).

  • 4 different locations (platforms or mediums).

Read that first number again: Seven hours!

It takes seven hours of someone consuming your content, listening to your voice, and understanding your methodology before they feel comfortable enough to hand you their hard-earned money.

Now, let’s do the math on short-form content. If you need to get your ideal prospect to consume seven hours of your media, how many 30-second TikToks or 60-second Instagram Reels do they need to watch?

You would need them to watch 420 to 840 short-form videos.

And that is banking on the massive assumption that the algorithm will even show them your next video, which it rarely does. You end up putting an immense amount of effort into making a 60-second video, hoping it reaches your ideal client, just for its shelf life to die off in 24 to 48 hours.

As someone with a background in mechanical engineering, I look at business through the lens of systems and efficiency. Building a system that requires you to create 500 videos just to acquire one client is a broken, highly inefficient system. There is a much better way.

The Solution: YouTube Long-Form Content

If we know that short-form content is mathematically inefficient for hitting the 7-hour trust mark, what is the alternative?

The answer—and the highest leverage activity you can be doing right now—is YouTube long-form content.

Here is exactly why YouTube is the ultimate asset for experts and personal brands:

1. Search Marketing vs. Interruption Marketing

Unlike TikTok or Instagram, YouTube is not an interruption marketing platform. It is the world’s second-largest search engine.

When users go to YouTube, they are actively looking for something. They have a problem, and they are searching for a solution. Even if they are searching on Google, Google will recommend YouTube videos that answer their specific question.

You are no longer playing the virality game. You do not need to dance or point at text on a screen. YouTube knows what people are searching for, it knows what your video is about, and it pairs the two together. This creates a relationship with a high-intent viewer. They are not stumbling across you while mindlessly scrolling; they are leaning in, taking notes, and actively seeking your expertise.

2. Multipliers on Your Time

If we are fighting for attention to reach those seven hours of consumption, why would we make a video that only gives us 30 seconds of watch time?

When you create a long-form YouTube video, you fight for the same initial click, but you are rewarded with 10, 20, or even 30 minutes of deep, focused watch time. With just one or two well-crafted YouTube videos, you can move a prospect significantly closer to that 7-hour buying threshold.

3. The Compounding Asset

When I am not geeking out over marketing systems, I am an adrenaline junkie. I grew up racing motocross and super bikes, and today I spend my free time tuning and racing RC cars. In racing, everything is about precision, non-stop analysis, and building a machine that performs reliably over time.

Your content should be a finely tuned machine.

When you post a piece of content on Instagram, it has a lifespan of about 48 hours before it is buried in the feed forever. You put all that effort into providing value, and it vanishes.

YouTube videos, on the other hand, are compounding assets. Because YouTube is a search engine, a video you make today can still be discovered, watched, and generate leads for you 1 month, 1 year, or 5 years from now. As people continue to search for the specific solution you provide, YouTube will continue to serve your video to them. You build the asset once, and it pays dividends for years.

Quality and Character Over Quantity

I have always believed that business should be an asset that adds to your quality of life. My guiding star is Memento Mori, Memento Vivere—remember that you will die, so remember to live. If your marketing strategy requires you to work until you are dead, grinding out three videos a day that you hate making, it is not a business worth running.

You don't need to be the loudest person in the room to win. You just need to be the most authentic, and you need to put your message where it can be found by the right people.

I once worked with a Fractional CFO who was told by other agencies that she needed to conform to the traditional financial industry standards. They told her to wear boring suits, use the color green because "it's the color of money," and maintain a rigid, corporate tone.

When we worked together, we threw all of that out the window. We engineered her brand to reflect who she really was. She loved the bold strength of the color red. She preferred getting her work done sitting on her couch, snuggled up with her dogs. We built a brand around her true character. Shortly after, a prospect who had been on the fence saw her real, authentic self, felt an immediate connection, and signed a 6-figure contract.

That is the power of deep, authentic connection. You cannot build that level of trust in a 15-second interrupted scroll. You build it by sitting down with your audience, sharing your expertise in a long-form format, and letting them get to know the real you.

Stop Fighting the Algorithm, Build a System

Now, don’t mistake this for “don’t post short-form content”. It’s a matter of efficiency and focus. Short form can still capture your ideal clients attention but then they need the ability to dive deeper.

Focus your energy on creating high-leverage, long-form YouTube content that acts as a compounding asset for your business. Speak directly to your client, answer their deepest questions, and let the search engine bring your ideal clients directly to you.

You can even clip up your long-form content into shorts that go everywhere! That’s efficient, that’s a system geared towards gaining and converting attention.
